Questions about the Hydrant Application

  1. What is the Purpose of this Application?
    Many insurance companies will give home insurance premium discounts depending on how close you live to a fire hydrant. The Greenfield Fire District has collected this hydrant data for our own internal usage, and because of the potential insurance savings, we wanted to pass the information to our community in the hopes of saving our residents money.

    The Greenfield Fire District answers many questions a year from insurance agents asking for this information as they are putting together policies for their insured.
  2. How do I use this Application?
    The application is relatively simple to use. Each red colored pin on the map represents a fire hydrant. All you have to do to use the application is follow these instructions:

    1. Click on a given fire hydrant (any will do, but we suggest you select the one you believe to be closest to your residence)
    2. You will see a balloon window open up over top of the hydrant you just clicked on. Enter your address to your home in the format:
      123 STREET NAME, CITY, NY ZIPCODE
      And then click the "Check" button to calculate the distance between the address and the given hydrant.

      Note that clicking the "Reset Address" button will erase the text entered into the Address box.
    3. If you enter a valid address in the above format, the shortest travel distance to the hydrant will be displayed with a highlighted blue path from the address entered, and the closest point on a road to the hydrant.
    4. By clicking on the "Reset Map" button (middle left of the map) will erase all drawn highlighted paths and return the map to its original state.

    Then you simply call up your insurance agency and give them this information to see if you qualify for a discount on your premium.

  3. Are only "wet hydrants" displayed, or are "dry hydrants" also displayed?
    Both hydrants are displayed on the map - the application does not distinguish between the two. For those who do not know what these terms mean: a "wet hydrant" is a hydrant that has water pressure, so that when you open up the valve, water will come out of the hydrant. A "dry hydrant", in contrast, requires a pump to draw water out of the hydrant - such as a fire engine. Note that both "wet" and "dry" hydrants have water, the only difference is how the water is extracted from the hydrant.

    Note that through discussions with various insurance carriers, it is generally the case that insurance agencies do not distinguish between the two types of hydrants - but you should verify this and email us with any questions.
  4. I think you Forgot a Hydrant - I know where one is!
    Great! Send us an email and let us know the details of the hydrant and we'll be more than happy to add the hydrant to this application!
  5. How come there aren't More Fire Hydrants Close to me?
    Unfortunately the Greenfield Fire District is not the decider of hydrant locations or even the number of hydrants. We do however give input into the Planning and Zoning processes of both the Town of Wilton and Greenfield, but we do not serve in any official authority.

    If you believe that a hydrant should be located closer to your neighborhood, contact your town who will be able to direct you to the appropriate committee/authority who can address your concerns.
  6. Do you have the new Saratoga County Water Pipeline Shown in this Application?
    No - but there are plans to add these hydrants in the future.
  7. What Exactly is the Distance Displayed by this Application? The distance shown is the shortest driving distance from the entered address and the selected hydrant. This application will not show the "as the crow flies" distance, as its probably not the most practical way that a fire company would access the fire hydrant.

  8. How was this Application Created?
    The fire department has a variety of GPS devices that are used to mark key locations within the fire district - such as snow mobile trails, mountain bike trails, and landing zone locations for Albany Med Flight.

    We used these GPS devices to literally mark the latitude and longitude of each fire hydrant. This data was then collected into one document and then integrated with Google Maps, which is the technology which allows us to display the hydrants on this webpage.
